July 2019, Illinois, Day 11

We boarded a boat for a morning tour of the Chicago river and its architecture. Our tour guide had a speech sound disorder. Of course he did.

But, whew! He was a wealth of knowledge and spewed forth about every brace, bracket and balustrade. He hardly took a breath for an hour and a half! My gracious this is a beautiful city. I hate to break it to NYC, but Chi-town is my new favorite.

We continued our pizza battle royale by sampling some pizza from Giordano’s. There were antsy children, moody tweens and short tempers which made a wonderful side dish to our deep dish pizzas. Fun fact: Deep dish pizza’s take up to ONE HOUR to cook? Isn't that a lot of fun family time!?!?!

The verdict in my case is that I’m more of a thin crust girl. But, if I had to choose, I think I’d go with Lou Malnati’s. I polled the family and we are divided across gender lines. But, we have more girls than boys.

Next stop, we set our sights on the Museum of Science and Industry.

Mr. Bullington added this stop to the itinerary after our friend Justin recommended it. Same Justin that suggested the Harvard Natural History Museum, so we trusted his rec. To further convince me, Mr. Bullington pointed out that the museum is housed in one of the few remaining original historic buildings built for the World’s Fair in 1893. The museum contained such topics as Space, and making stuff out of things, and things out of stuff, and meteors...I bet,  and ions...I imagine, and gravity….probably. They did have a chick hatchery where you could watch little baby chicks busting out of their little tiny egg shell prisons and  a WWII GERMAN U-BOAT!!! Also, there was a sliced up human cadaver, so that was cool. The Bullington family road trip body count has increased to 4+. We had a little mishap when Mr. Bullington and the kids were doing some sort of flight simulator doohickie. It was my job to hold all of the things (phones, wallets, glasses). I had to made a quick trip to the ladies room. When I got back, I didn’t see anyone. They were in the simulators, but in my mind they’d left because we had 4:30 tickets to tour the U-boat and it was 4:25. I descended 3 flights of stairs and they weren’t there. I also noticed that I had no phone service down by the U-Boat, I had everyone phones, so if Mr. Bullington found a way to call me, I couldn’t answer. So, I just went and stood in a central location and waited for them to find me which eventually worked, albeit 15 minutes after our scheduled U-boat tour. Fortunately, the folks at the museum were accommodating and gave us a private tour! This German U-505 is the only one on display in the Western hemisphere and our tour guide was AWESOME! Awesome Allison did a masterful job of peaking the children’s interest and encouraging their curiosity. And now we’ve been on a German submarine.

Welcome to the world, little chicks
That, my friends, is a captured U-Boat! USA! USA!

I hope Awesome Allison is a classroom teacher during the school year.
It's a real drag to stub your toe on a live missile when you roll out of bed.

We took an Uber to the Cubs game and I noticed something. Uber drivers will often change the radio station when you get in the car. They might be listening to something they like (rap, songs in their native language, etc) then they change it to something they think you will like based on the way you look. So far this trip, our Uber drivers have changed the station to Kenny G and Contemporary Christian Praise music when they saw us coming. Is it the Fanny pack?
