Mile 1590- Minnesota-We are staying in the cutest little
area of Minneapolis called the Warehouse district. We are a few blocks from the Mississippi
River, so we decided (John decided) it would be fun to take a kayaking trip. I
agreed (reluctantly) and we were on our way! We left the boy with Nana Curtis
because as those of you who are close to us know, Thomakaze cannot be trusted
around large bodies/small bodies/any bodies of water. We walked down to the put-in, which lo and
behold was also the take-out spot. These crazy people wanted us to paddle up
stream a ways and THEN paddle/float down. Say what? Ain’t nobody got time for
that. And, my precious cargo, Mater
Mater Couch Potater was less than inclined to assist in the paddling. And by
less than inclined, I mean that by the time we got back, sweet lazy bones was
actually asleep in the front of the boat. I use the term boat very loosely.
Now, I am no newbie to the kayak world. I actually paddled quite a bit of white
water in my college days. But, we put in UP stream and got out DOWN stream. We
also paddled nimble little white water boats. I was in a tandem sit-on-top,
full of dead weight in the front and me in the back (I, too, am bringing a fair
amount of weight to the table). It was like paddling a freaking bathtub, up
stream, into a gusty headwind. But the views were nice, see how Pollyanna I can be?
At least Nana accompanied us to Minneapolis, because we actually got to go out
on a date that night! And, after 7 days in the car/one hotel room with the
children, we were due for some grown up time. We started, not at all
surprisingly, at a really cool unmarked bar called Marvel Bar and followed up
with a great dinner at The Butcher and The Boar. Thank you, Nana!!!
