We got up and loaded the car for the seventeen thousandth time and headed west. Midweek and the magical minivan that we've dubbed Stinky Stacy is starting to show some wear. The desert is a dirty, dirty place and the dust is everywhere. I've stopped caring. We traveled through the the Mojave dessert and ended at Joshua Tree, a lovely National Park and arguably U2's best album. We explored the park and took a few short hikes. We all loved climbing on the huge boulders. It was fun and I think the lesson here is that we are not a desert people. My skin feels like a potato chip and I don't have time and energy to drink all this water so I don't shrivel up and die. My hydration diet of wine and coffee doesn't really work out here and I have to hydrate like it is my job. You can't even be a tree hugger, because the trees will stab you.

We wanted to check out our digs for the evening, so we headed over to Castle House Estate. Mr. Bullington really wanted to camp on this trip. My response was, "Nope". Not because I don't enjoy camping, but I don't enjoy shlepping camping gear across the country for one or two nights under the stars. So, I appeased his wanderlust and found this little place that would take a lot of our money to let us sleep in one of their tents. Actually, this place was so cute! Our Yurt had an actual bed and room service! Now, that is my kind of camping!

We headed into the funky little town of Joshua Tree to the Joshua Tree Saloon. If it's good enough for Johnny, it's good enough for us!

Arming himself for the inevitable brawl that is about to break out in the saloon. |
We got back to the Yurt and our nightly entertainment consisted of the peals of laughter echoing through the property as Mae and Charlotte attempted to take an outdoor shower. I don't know if you've ever shared space with a teenage girl, but showers are life and one will be taken no matter how challenging. I, on the other hand, took a shower in dry shampoo and Febreze. Or as we say in Marietta, Wednesday. We ordered a s'mores kit and some firewood and gazed at the amazing night sky. Joshua Tree is a designated dark sky park and the sky was unreal.
